The Toyota Motor Corporation brings back the Supra nameplate after 17 years, yes you heard that right! it’s been 17 years. The GR Supra 2020 is the fifth generation model formed as an A90.
The design gets the inspiration from the CALTY FT-1 concept that was showcased back in Detroit Auto Show 2014
After forming a partnership with BMW Motors this will be the first product from Toyota Motor Corporation that will share the platform, technology and components.
The A90 GR Supra is based on the BMW Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform which also shared with the BMW Z4.
The Japan will be the first country to get the fifth generation GR Supra in mid 2019. The GR stands for GAZOO Racing which is Toyota Motor Corporation’s owned motorsport division.
The A90 GR Supra is the first global model from their Toyota Motor Corporation GR sports car series lineup. The A90 GR Supra measures in 4,380mm in overall length, 1,865mm in overall width and 1,295mm in overall height.
The A90 Supra’s wheelbase measures at 2,470mm. The Supra will be available with two engine options in the Japan market.
The 3.0-litre straight six inline 6-cylinders 2,998cc turbo petrol engine produces a 340bhp of maximum power at 5,000rpm to 6,500rpm and 500nm of torque at 1,600rpm to 4,500rpm.
The 2.0-litre four cylinder inline 1,998cc turbo petrol engine will comes with a two state of tune, one with a 250bhp of power at 5,000rpm to 6,500rpm and the 400nm of torque at 1,550rpm to 4,400rpm.
The other state of tune engine will produce 197bhp of power at 4,500rpm to 6,500rpm and the 320nm of torque at 1,450rpm to 4,300rpm.
Both engines will me mated to a ZF source 8-speed sports automatic gearbox. But there’s no official word on manual transmission this maybe launch in later stage of year.
Both engines will send the power to the rear wheels which makes the A90 GR Supra a rear wheel drive car. Toyota Motor Corporation claimed the 0-100kmph can be reached in only 4.3 seconds.
On the inside, the Toyota A90 GR Supra comes with a feature loaded be goodies. A90 gets the 8.8-inch centre screen infotainment display, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers and a smaller 6.5-inch touchscreen display all these features come as the standard.
On the premium
The GR Supra also gets the JBL premium audio system on the premium variant. Other features include traction control, ABS, launch control and so much more on the safety front.
Toyota Motor Corporation said on the Detroit Auto Show 2019 that they learned so much from the Toyota GT86 about the driving dynamics and handling characteristics.
Tetsuya Tada the chief engineer on the A90 GR Supra development project explained, that the goal was to build a proper pure sports car with the ultimate driving pleasure.
He said, “Rather than chasing the right numbers for horsepower or lap times, we also focused on
Tada said, the lessons that we learned from the GT86 helped them making the A90 GR Supra a much better sports car. He also said that the they were targeting 50-50 front to rear weight distribution with an even lower center of gravity that the Toyota GT86.
